This 7-day Northern Vietnam motorcycle itinerary takes you through stunning mountain passes, vibrant ethnic cultures, and dramatic landscapes. Riding with an Easy Rider is the perfect way to navigate these challenging, winding mountain roads safely while taking in the views
Day 1: Sapa to Bac Ha via Lao Cai ( L, D )
  • Distance: ~100 km
  • Highlights: Descend the dramatic mountain slopes from Sapa to Lao Cai City on the Chinese border. Wind up the scenic DT153 highway into the highland district of Bac Ha.
  • Activities: Visit the Lao Cai border milestone and explore the Hoang A Tuong Palace (Hmong King's Palace) in Bac Ha.
  • Overnight: Homestay or local hotel in Bac Ha.
Day 2: Bac Ha to Hoang Su Phi (via Xin Man) ( B, L, D )
  • Distance: ~110 km
  • Highlights: Ride through the remote border towns of Si Ma Cai and Xin Man along steep, raw mountain tracks. Cross into Ha Giang province to find the towering mountainsides of Hoang Su Phi. 
  • Activities: Witness some of the steepest and most breathtaking terraced rice fields in Vietnam. Stop at rural villages of the Nung and La Chi ethnic groups. 
  • Overnight: local homestay in Nam Hong village (Hoang Su Phi).
Day 3: Hoang Su Phi to Ha Giang City ( B, L, D )
  • Distance: ~100 km
  • Highlights: Navigate the winding, heavily forested terrain of the DT177 route down towards National Highway 2. The road opens up as you approach the riverside gateway city of Ha Giang.
  • Activities: Capture panoramic vistas of the Tay Con Linh mountain range. Stop at the "Ha Giang KM 0" milestone to mark the official start of your loop adventure.
  • Overnight: Homestay bugalow or hotel in Ha Giang City.
Day 4: Ha Giang City to Dong Van ( B, L, D )
  • Distance: ~140 km
  • Highlights: Scale the famous Bac Sum Pass and Heaven’s Gate in Quan Ba. Wind through the surreal limestone peaks of the UNESCO-recognized Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark.
  • Activities: Photograph the iconic Twin Mountains in Quan Ba, conquer the zigzagging Tham Ma Pass, and tour the historic Vuong Family Mansion (the original Hmong King Palace).
  • Overnight: Traditional hotel or homestay in Dong Van Old Quarter. 
Day 5: Dong Van to Meo Vac to Bao Lac ( B, L, D )
  • Distance: ~110 km
  • Highlights: Conquer the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, widely considered the most spectacular mountain pass in Vietnam, hanging over the emerald Nho Que River. Drop down into Meo Vac before riding into Cao Bang province via remote river valleys.
  • Activities: Take a breathtaking boat ride down the Nho Que River through the towering Tu San Canyon. Stop by local villages to encounter the distinct culture of the Black Lolo people near Bao Lac.
  • Overnight: Local guesthouse or hotel in Bao Lac.
Day 6: Bao Lac to Ba Be Lake ( B, L, D )
  • Distance: ~130 km
  • Highlights: Leave the rocky karst landscapes behind as you transition into the lush, green forests of Ba Be National Park. The roads smooth out into sweeping valley curves.
  • Activities: Trade your motorbike seat for a peaceful afternoon boat cruise across Ba Be Lake. Explore Puong Cave and relax by the lakeside away from the mountain roads.
  • Overnight: Traditional stilt-house homestay in Tay minority villages like Pac Ngoi 
Day 7: Ba Be Lake to Hanoi ( B, L )
  • Distance: ~220 km
  • Highlights: Enjoy a smooth, final southbound cruise out of the mountains along national highways, transitioning back into the bustling traffic of the Red River Delta and Hanoi.
  • Activities: Take a morning stroll along the lake before departure. Arrive back in Hanoi by late afternoon to celebrate completing the ultimate northern loop.
Key Travel Tips for Your Journey
  • Pack for Variable Weather: Mountain passes can be intensely hot in the valleys but very cold, foggy, or rainy at high altitudes. Bring a lightweight rain jacket and layers.
